August 23, 2016

Dear Friends:

I spent the other day helping a friend sift through resumes and cover letters for a position he was hiring at his company.

Out of about 20 resumes, there were about nine that fit the qualifications and experience required for the position. However, of those nine, only four made it into the interview process.

In actuality, there were probably 16 applicants of those 20 that fit the qualifications, but the resumes and cover letters of the majority of applicants suffered from the most common (and most fixable) problems.

We had about an hour and a half to look at 20 resumes.  That is not a lot of time.

We saw clever cover letters and intricately designed resumes. We read cover letters that told us nothing about why the candidate wanted the job and we saw resumes that had no experience whatsoever for the job being applied to.

However, the resumes and cover letters that stood out were notable for their simplicity. The job seekers presented the relevant connections between their experience and background and the qualifications and experience as spelled out in the job posting.

This was a reminder that all too often, job seekers make it more difficult on themselves than needed. I understand that many times, it's a guessing game for job seekers in terms of how to best represent yourself when applying for a job, but at its core, employers are looking for the most simple reasons as to why a job seeker is qualified and can solve their problem.

Before you begin drafting your resume and cover letter for a specific job, interpret the job posting to understand the specific skills, experience and requirements needed for the position. Your resume and your cover letter will be tailored to these points as you make the case as to why you'd be the best fit.

Resume
First off, the format of your resume should look like this. Yes, chop up your fancy, graphically designed, cute resume with its different fonts and colors and graphics and format it to look like this. Don’t drop the font to 5-point type to fit it all on to one page. Keep it at 10-12 point font, but don’t make it more than two pages.  Entry-level or early career professionals might be able to keep it to one page, but a 2-page resume is a good standard length.

Write to the job posting based on the specific requirements including skills and experience. Search for key words in the job posting and customize each resume with keywords, key phrases and dates. This is not only important for the person reading it, but also important for the computer that is scanning your resume! Yes, many companies use applicant tracking systems that are ranking you based on key words and dates. The computer is programmed to search for these words and dates.

An effective resume is designed in a way that's quick to read and helps the reader to quickly make decisions in your favor. Most recruiters will spend less than one minute making a judgment about you based on your resume. Your resume should graphically lead the eyes to the most important things:  Prior work, dates, highlight of experience and keywords and phrases relevant to the job posting.

This should not be too overwhelming to most people and after a while, you should be able to easily customize each resume to fit the job posting in a relatively short period of time.

However, if you're struggling with your resume or are feeling insecure about it, visit my friend Ruth Pankratz, a certified professional resume writer for assistance. You can find her at www.gabbycommunications.com

Cover Letter
In every instance, the job candidates that got invited for an interview had great cover letters.

So what's a great cover letter?

Simple.

You have your standard polite introduction and your polite ending.

You have one paragraph that is your standard presentation of qualifications.

And then, in each cover letter, you customize only 2-3 paragraphs – that make a connection between your skills, your job experience and why these things are relevant to the job you are applying.  It also allows you to prove you have properly researched the company by including details about why your experience is tied to their industry or their culture. Or, you may have a more direct connection to the company that you can highlight.

Address and Email
Have a local address for the company you are applying to. If you are moving from outside of the state and don't have a physical address in the state, leave your address off. Not having a local address is one easy way to be eliminated from consideration.

In addition, have a professional email address.  no1broncofan@gmail.com is not professional.  kickasssnowboarder@yahoo.com is juvenile and you will not be taken seriously.

Lastly, include a link to your LinkedIn profile.  It's an easy way for an employer to do some double checking.  They can also see your LinkedIn recommendations and perhaps see if they have some personal or professionals connections to you.

Follow the instructions in the job posting.
If the employer asks for certain things in a job posting, include it!  If they want a salary history or salary requirements, a list of references, examples of specific work or your most favorite recipe for pancakes, include it! By not following instructions in a job posting, you are risking not be considered at all.

Bottom Line

Be confident in yourself. Believe in yourself. Think of the accomplishments in your career that exemplify your skills, experience and work ethic. Confidence can explode on a resume and a cover letter and, in fact, the most confident resumes and cover letters are also the most simple with direct connections to skills, talents, accomplishments and experience.
